Tatewaki Uesugi was born in 1809 in Japan.
Toward the end of the Shogunate and as Japan was on the verge of entering into diplomatic relations with foreign countries, Tatewaki Uesugi advocated the study of Western learning and eventually founded a school of Western learning at his residence where he taught military strategy, gunnery, astronomy, geography, history and physics.
Later he began producing guns, gunpowder and built forts in Mikawa (Aichi Prefecture). When the Owari Clan decided to build a battery he was placed in charge of the military organization.
Among his distinguished disciples were Haruzo Yanagawa and Saburo Utsunolya.
