Eiler earned both her BFA (1966) and MFA (1969) from Ohio University, Athens. She also studied in 1966 at the University of Missouri, Columbia.
She has been associate director of the Institute of Visual Communication at Ohio University since 1978. She has also been an assignment contract photographer for National Geographic since 1970 and a freelance photographer and co-owner of Mugwump, a stock photo agency, during the same period.
Eiler received Ohio University's outstanding “University Professor" award in 1979.
