Since 1974 he has been the director of photography at The Mercury in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Prior to that he was chief photographer for Today’s Post in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania (1971-74), and a freelance photographer for the Montgomery Post and the Times Herald in Norristown, Pennsylvania (1969-71).

Kelly has been both the associate director of the NPPA and the president of the Pennsylvania Press Photographers Association since 1973.
