In 1924 Thomas worked for the Baltimore News. From 1925 to 1926 he worked for the Sun, the Washington Herald (1926-1928) and the Washington Daily News (1928-1935). From 1935 to 1936 he freelanced for Time, and served on the staff of Life, from 1936 to 1961.
In 1936 Thomas was a staff photographers for Life's premier issue. Noted for his candid news shots, McAvoy was one of the first photographers to use a Leica for news coverage. His work strongly influenced contemporary U.S. photojournalism.
