(The goal of the volume is to provide some background on t...)
The goal of the volume is to provide some background on the various financial market segments of the Asian Pacific region. An understanding of institutional detail (size and scope) of the relevant markets affords a view that lends or detracts from the credibility of intermarket comparisons. An exposure and understanding of institutional detail supplies information that may bear on the statistical results of the empirical analysis. The vital roles played bycapital markets of pricing capital, issuing new shares, providing a liquidity-creating secondary feature, serving as a vehicle for asset transfer, and providing a linkage to international capital markets are as important to emerging markets as to developed countries.

( In Illiberal Reformers, Thomas Leonard reexamines the e...)
In Illiberal Reformers, Thomas Leonard reexamines the economic progressives whose ideas and reform agenda underwrote the Progressive Era dismantling of laissez-faire and the creation of the regulatory welfare state, which, they believed, would humanize and rationalize industrial capitalism. But not for all. Academic social scientists such as Richard T. Ely, John R. Commons, and Edward A. Ross, together with their reform allies in social work, charity, journalism, and law, played a pivotal role in establishing minimum-wage and maximum-hours laws, workmen's compensation, progressive income taxes, antitrust regulation, and other hallmarks of the regulatory welfare state. But even as they offered uplift to some, economic progressives advocated exclusion for others, and did both in the name of progress. Leonard meticulously reconstructs the influence of Darwinism, racial science, and eugenics on scholars and activists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, revealing a reform community deeply ambivalent about America's poor. Economic progressives championed labor legislation because it would lift up the deserving poor while excluding immigrants, African Americans, women, and "mental defectives," whom they vilified as low-wage threats to the American workingman and to Anglo-Saxon race integrity. Economic progressives rejected property and contract rights as illegitimate barriers to needed reforms. But their disregard for civil liberties extended much further. Illiberal Reformers shows that the intellectual champions of the regulatory welfare state proposed using it not to help those they portrayed as hereditary inferiors, but to exclude them.

[MP3CD audiobook format in vinyl case.] [Read by Robert Morris] How much of a racial group's economic fate is determined by the surrounding society it lives in, and how much by internal patterns that follow that same group around the world? Using an international framework to analyze a group of differences, Sowell has pioneered a new approach for pursuing this important study, utilizing historical experience and empirical data. The results are fascinating and sometimes surprising. For instance, he finds that the social and economic patterns among Italians in Australia and Argentina are similar in many respects to those of Italians in Italy or the United States. And, though blacks have not faced the same massive and rigid oppression in Brazil as in the United States, economic differences between blacks and whites are significantly greater in Brazil.

(A comprehensive examination of the ways competition and i...)
A comprehensive examination of the ways competition and innovations level the playing field in the free market The Economics of Competition uses the South African pharmaceutical industry as a case study to cogently challenge accepted economic and regulatory views on competition and monopoly, then re-establishes and emphasizes the importance of foundational economic principles. The book comprehensively explores the concept that monopoly is self-limiting within unrestricted competition, as well as the various market features of competition, innovation, and market power. This detailed examination broadens understanding of the economics of competition for both scholars and practitioners. Competition is seen as a continuous process in a free market. The Economics of Competition thoughtfully explores the competitive process in its two mechanisms, the transfer of market share from one rival to another, and innovation of a new product, new method of production, new market opening, or new source of supply of raw materials. The dynamic nature of the marketplace is thoroughly examined from the author's inside view of the South African pharmaceutical industry. This provides a rare opportunity to closely examine an industry considered to be a monopoly while actively applying economic theories of competition and freedom of choice. The effects of public policy, legislation, and pricing regulations are discussed in detail. The book has several tables and figures to enhance clarity and is extensively referenced. The Economics of Competition discusses: * monopoly and rivalry in the free market * theories of perfect competition * innovation as a controlling variable * pricing and price differentiation * barriers to competition—including historical and contemporary legislative barriers * horizontal mergers and acquisitions as a key aspect of market power * and more! The Economics of Competition is insightful, thought-provoking reading for policymakers as well as anyone practising antitrust law, microeconomics, industrial economics, managerial economics, marketing strategy, theoretical public health, and students and educators of marketing and economics.

( Ethnic literature figures prominently in the current de...)
Ethnic literature figures prominently in the current debate on multiculturalism, but even its supporters have had little to say about it as literature, stressing instead its political and sociological context. Thomas J. Ferraro, in this lively and accessible study of modern fiction by Americans of immigrant background, argues that the best of these stories demand—and reward—close reading and attention to questions of genre and literary form. Ferraro engages the literature of immigration and mobility by asking what motivates its authors and what their work actually accomplishes. He concentrates on five diverse examples of the "up-from-the-ghetto" narrative: Mario Puzo's The Godfather, Anzia Yezierska's Bread Givers, Henry Roth's Call It Sleep, Henry Miller's "The Tailor Shop," and Maxine Hong Kingston's The Woman Warrior. To Ferraro the unsuspected value of these works is that they recast the conventions of ethnic representation, illustrating the power of ethnic writing to capture and redirect the national literary imagination. Ferraro's sharply observed reading of these five works shows how such reenactments of immigrant mobility test the ideology of assimilation against the writer's experience. Ethnic Passages will refocus discussion of how literature addresses the American conflict between ethnic heritage and the greater opportunities of "mainstream" society.

(Book by Tait-Meiss)
My early work (1960-1975) was primarily in the history of economic theory. If there was any recurring theme in this work, it was that too often current issues and ideas are read back into economists of the past, creating gross distortions. When my interests shifted to other areas, I discovered that this was part of a more general recklessness with facts in the interest of preconceived visions.
Since the mid-1970s, my work has been concerned with (1) racial and ethnic groups and (2) social theory. My principal book in the first area is The Economics and Politics of Race. My principal book applying the economic approach to social theory in general is Knowledge and Decisions.
I am currently at work on another book in social theory, A Conflict of Visions. lieutenant seeks to explain why a few different underlying assumptions about the nature of man, knowledge, and social causation translate into repeated and drastic differences on a vast spectrum of social and political issues.
