He was called Kai-noTokuhon because he stayed in Kai Province (Yamanashi Prefecture) the longest during his many years of wandering. He lived an independent life. With his medicine bag hanging from his neck, he was wont to ride on the back of a cow. His fame rose when he cured a disease of Shogun Hidetada Tokugawa. Well versed in Chinese pharmacology, he encouraged the culture of grapes. He wrote several books on medical subjects.
