After graduating from Tokyo University (1928) was appointed instructor at Meiji University (1935), then a librarian of the National Diet Library, in which capacity he collected important data concerning the policy and diplomacy of the Meiji Era (1949). Later instructor at Tokyo University (1951) and then professor of history at Nagoya University.
