Tatsuro Yamamoto served as a member of the Eastern Cultural Study Institute. He was appointed assistant professor of Tokyo University in 1942 and professor in 1949. He received a doctorate in 1951. He specially studied the history of the South Sea Region before the Ming Dynasty, especially Annamese history.
