Ruled his province with benevolence. During 1789-1804 when the Russians invaded Japan's northern borders, the Shoguncite ordered him to defend those borders. He sent troops to Ezo (Hokkaido) and beat back the Russians. The Shogunate ·rewarded him by increasing his fief to 200,000 koku.
