The actual date of birth of this famous painter of the Tosa school is not known, though it is said that he was born in Nagoya during the Edo Period.
He studied in Kyoto, where he studied the technique of the school of Tosa.
After considerable research in old paintings he developed a style of his own. Late in life he lost his eyesight and realizing that his days as a painter were over he killed himself by cutting off his tongue. He left behind some books on art, including the Tosei Nenju Gyoji (Modern Annual Events) (5 vols.) and lgyo Kamo-rw-Matsuri-zu (Pictures of Kamo Festival).
