Son of Nagatsuna Hashimoto, a physician of the Echizen Clan (Fukui Prefecture), he was born in Fukui City. Sanai Hashimoto, noted loyalist, was his brother.

Studied at the Meidokan School and under Physician Chuan Nakai. Further studied in Nagasaki and Edo.
Became subsequently a professor at the Tokyo University and chief of the Medical Bureau, War Office. Nominated a member of the House of Peers, Court Council, and Imperial Academy and Surgeon General. He was made a surgery instructor at his clan’s medical school. (1866). When the imperial forces attacked Aiza, Fukushima Prefecture, he created a field hospital in Echigo (Niigata Prefecture). Traveled to Europe (1872). He served as a military surgeon in a campaign against insurgents led by Takamori Saigo (1877).
