In the Imperial campaign in northern Japan, he was a staff officer of the Shimazu army.
He was appointed senior secretary of Kagoshima Prefecture (1871) and then its governor. When Takamori Saigo and his followers revolted against the government (1877), he helped the rebels by forwarding them weapons, ammunitions and food. After the rebellion was suppressed, he was arrested and decapitated in Nagasaki.
