Tsuneharu Washio was born in 1168 in Hyogo, Japan. He was the son of a hunter of Settsu Province (Hyogo Prefecture).

Tsuneharu Washio was born in 1168 in Hyogo, Japan. He was the son of a hunter of Settsu Province (Hyogo Prefecture).
Tsuneharu Washio worked for Yoshitsune Minamoto as a pathfinder to lead his army across the mountains to attack Heike's forces. On this occasion he was given the name Tsuneharu Washio by Yoshitsune. After the enemy had been destroyed at Ichinotani, he became a regular warrior for Yoshitsune and distinguished himself in the battles of Yashima and Dannoura.
Later Tsuneharu Washio served as guard to Yoshitsune while the latter was on his way to Hidehira Fujiwara's castle in Ou (north eastern Japan). He was killed in action fighting the army of Yasuhira Fujiwara at Koromogawa.
