Miyasaka was born on September 10, 1953 in Kamakura, Kanagawa, Japan; the son of Teruo and Teiko (Soda) Miyasaka.
Miyasaka received a Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from Waseda University in 1976. Two years later he was given a Master of Science degree in Engineering and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Engineering from the University of Tokyo in 1981.
Miyasaka began his career as a researcher at Ashigara Research Laboratories of Fuji Photo Film Company in Kanagawa in 1981. Ten years later he became a manager at the same company.
In 2001, Tsutomu joined the Toin University of Yokohama in Japan as professor in Graduate School of Engineering. In 2004, he has established a TUY-based company, Peccell Technologies and served as Chief Executive Officer.
Two years later Miyasaka took a position of the dean of the Graduate School at the Toin University of Yokohamaand and held it for three years. He also worked as a guest professor at The University of Tokyo in 2005-2010.
Nowadays Tsutomu is a professor of the Toin University of Yokohama and a fellow of Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology of The University of Tokyo.
Miyasaka is known for his research in organic solar cells and design of artificial retina. He has contributed to the design of low-temperature solution-printing process for fabrication of dye-sensitized solar cells and solid-state hybrid photovoltaic (PV) cells.
Tsutomu is a founder of Peccell Technologies. He received Chemical Society of Japan Award and Clarivate (Thomson Reuter) Citation Laureate in 2017 on his research of perovskite photovoltaics.
