Kress began his career as a graduate research assistant at the University of Tennessee in 1986 and had held it for three years. In 1988, he took the position of an expert consultant at Snider and Associates, where he served until 1998. In 1989, Tyler became a research associate and instructor at the University of Tennessee and had held it until 1996.
He served as a senior research engineer at the University of Tennessee from 1991 to 1996. In 1996, Tyler was appointed an associate director and director in 1997 at Engineering Institute for Trauma & Injury Prevention of the University of Tennessee. Also since 1997 he has been working an adjunct professor at that university.
