Ujinao Hojo was born in 1562. He was the eldest son of Tjjimasa.
In 1582 Kazumasa Takikawa, lord of Kozuke Province (Gumma Prefecture), went to Kyoto because of the Honnoji Incident in which Nobunaga Oda was assassinated by Mitsuhide Akechi, his retainer. Taking advantage of his absence, Ujinao attacked the forces of Kazumasa and defeated them on the River Kanna. He then invaded Shinano (Nagano Prefecture) and Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture), where he collided with Ieyasu Tokugawa. Though he was defeated by Ieyasu, he succeeded in making a compromise by marrying a daughter of Ieyasu. In 1585, Hideyoshi Toyotomi ordered Ujinao to come to Kyoto to pledge loyalty to him. Ljmao refused and sent his uncle, Ujinori, as his proxy to Kyoto. Enraged at his insolence, Hideyoshi sent his forces to the Kanto in March, 1590. Castle after castle was taken by Hideyoshi’s forces, and Odawara was isolated and besieged. Ujinao asked for mercy on his soldiers and surrendered to Hideyoshi. Ujinao was not killed because he was Ieyasu son-in-law but was exiled to Mt. Koya. He was pardoned (1591) through the mediation of Hidetada Tokugawa, son of Ieyasu, and was granted a fief of 10,000 koku.
