Background

Joshi, Umashankar Jethalal was born on July 21, 1911 in Bamana, India. Son of Jethalal K. and Navalbai B. (Thaker) Joshi.

Lecturer Sydenham College, Bombay, 1938-1939. Postgraduate teacher Gujarat Vidyasabha, 1939-1946. Professor Gujarati, director School Languages, Gujarat University, 1954-1970, vice-chancellor, 1966-1972.

Vice president Indian Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists and Novelists association, 1973-1985, president, since 1985. Chairman Indian Institute Mass Communication, 1978-1980. President National Academy Letters, 1978-1982.

Chancellor Visva-Bharati University, 1979-1982.
