Ushio Nakanishi was born in 1859.
In 1888 he went to the United States for further studies on Buddhism.
He established Shinsui Gijuku private school after his graduation.
After returning to Japan from his studies in the US, he was appointed deputy director of the Bungakuryo School of the Honganji Temple in Kyoto, headquarters of the Shinshii Sect. After that he became a newspaper writer and then an adviser to the Government-General of Formosa.
In 1927, he became a vice-chief priest of the Fuso Sect of Shintoism and subsequently its chief priest.
