Professor at Leningrad University, 1968. Deputy Chief of the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, 1970-1978. Responsible for relations with socialist countries and Comecon.

Chief of the Department for Liaison with Communist and Workers’ Parties of the Socialist Countries in the Central Committee since March 1986. Member of the Commission on Science and Technology of the USSR Supreme Soviet since 11 April 1984. Corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences (Economics Department) since 1984.

Elected to the Secretariat of the Central Committee on 6 March 1986. Full member of the Politburo, October 1988.
