After graduating from the seven-year school № 51, Valeriy Nikolaevich completed secondary education at school № 73 on Bolshoy Prospekt of the Petrograd Side (by this time the Yashins moved to Bolshaya Pushkarskaya Street). After receiving the certificate of maturity, he took the documents to the electrotechnical institute, but he got C for the first exam - mathematics. He collected the documents and got a job at the Petrograd telephone knot.
Valeriy Nikolaevich started his employment history being a pupil of the payphone installer, and after 2 weeks he received first digit of a rigger. After evening department of the M.A. Bonch-Bruevich Leningrad Electrotechnical Institute of Communications (now the State University of Telecommunications). By this time, his father had provided employment of a fitter-pneumatic in the laboratory of supersonic blowdown for him in the Mozhaisky Air Force Academy. In 1960, however, his studies had to be interrupted - Valery served in the army full 40 months. Thus, Valeriy Nikolaevich being a cadet got into the school of junior specialists of the tactical missile forces in Luga, near Leningrad. There Yashin studied for a year. In September 1961, cadet Yashin went to the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany - firstly to Dresden to the headquarters of the 1st Guards Tank Army, and then to the post of deputy commander of the launcher of a separate missile division, which was based on the territory of the former concentration camp Zethain near Riza. In December 1963, Valery Yashin returned to the institute and, after completing a number of disciplines, transferred to the first course of full-time studies. Yashin's annual participation in students’ construction brigades was one of the most striking events of student life: after freshman year, he worked as an ordinary trooper in Podberezye of the Novgorod Region, later as a commissar of the linear detachment on the steppe (Kokchetav region, Kazakhstan), as a commander of the line detachment, as a commissar of the district detachment. He was awarded a medal for meritorious labor "For the development of virgin and fallow lands", Certificate of Honor of the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR.
Valery Yashin returned as a graduate to the Petrograd Communication Center in 1968. He came to the post of engineer of cable networks of the workshop of linear structures, pretty soon he obtained the position of senior engineer, and after the promotion of his boss he became the acting head of the workshop. However, in 1971, the previous head of the shop returned after a long business trip from Georgia (the Leningrad telephone network was in charge of the Tbilisi telephone network), and Yashin resigned. He got the job of chief electrician of UNR-31 trust-87 Glavleningradstroy at the invitation of the builders - colleagues on the steppe. In April 1972, he was offered to return to the Petrograd Communication Center as the head of the workshop of linear structures. Valery Nikolayevich worked for three years in this post.
He worked as a chief power engineer of the trust "LenBAMstroy", and later (after renaming the trust to a mobile mehkolonna) – as a deputy head of the mobile mekhkolonna "LenBAMstroy."
In May 1978, Valeriy Nikolaevich returned to Leningrad after the expiration of the contract and was appointed head of the linear service of the Leningrad City Telephone Service (LCTS). Valeriy Nikolaevich led one of the main telephone companies of the country in St. Petersburg for seven years.
Valery Nikolayevich Yashin was invited to work in Moscow in October 1999 and was elected General Director of the largest telecommunications holding in Russia Svyazinvest OJSC. In 2001, a serious reorganization of OJSC Svyazinvest was started under the supervision of Valeriy Nikolaevich. The joint project of establishment of a national operator for providing Internet services RTKomm. RU with the participation of OJSC Rostelecom was one of the most significant projects in the field of high-tech services.
Valery Nikolayevich was elected academician of the International Academy of Communications.
Since June 2006 Valeriy Nikolaevich has been working as member of the Board of Directors of OJSC Svyazinvest. He was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of CJSC St. Petersburg Payphones (since January 1998), OJSC Telecominvest (1995-2006). He was Chairman of the Board of Directors OJSC Rostelecom (2000-2006), OJSC National Payphone Network (since 2001), member of the Board of Directors of OJSC Rostelecom (since 2000), OJSC CenterTelecom (since 2006), OJSC North-West Telecom (since 2002), member of the Board of Directors of OJSC MGTS (since 2000), CJSC Football Club Zenit (since 1996), Chairman of the Board of the Non-Governmental Pension Fund Telecom-Soyuz (since 1998), Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fund "Russian Foundation for the History of Communications" (since 2002), member of Supervisory Board of Insurance Joint Stock Company Medexpress (since 2004), co-founder of the public fund "Our city".
Valeriy Nikolaevich Yashin has been fond of sports since young, especially of track and field athletics (during the school years he had the 2nd rank). In the army he played football, basketball, volleyball. He likes skiing, chess.
