In 1969 he graduated after 10 years of secondary school № 73 in Kharkov. In 1973 he graduated from the Kharkiv Higher Military School of Pilots named after Gritsevets with diploma of the pilot-engineer. In 1987 he graduated from Gagarin Air Force Academy. In 1990 he graduated from the post-graduate course at Gagarin Air Force Academy. In 1995 he graduated from the Higher Academic Courses at the Academy of the General Staff.
Since November 30, 1973 he was the pilot-instructor of the 809 UAP Kharkiv Higher Military School. Since September 26, 1974 he was the pilot-instructor 812 UAP Kharkiv Higher Military School.
August 23, 1976 - by order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force assigned to the position of a listener-cosmonaut of the Air Force CTC (6th set).
January 30, 1979 - assigned to the post of a cosmonaut of the Air Force CTC.
December 1981 - August 1982 - commander of the backup crew of the visit to the DOS Salyut-7 together with V. Savinykh and I. Pronina.
