Particle physics:
Detector instrumentation (especially MWPCs), experiments at e+e− colliders (SPEAR, VEPP-4, VEPP-4M, PEP-II), development of new concepts of high-energy colliders. Precision measurements of J/Psi, Upsilon families and tau-lepton masses. First observation of C = + resonance production in gamma-gamma collisions, measurement of e+e- and gamma-gamma cross sections and various e+e− and gamma-gamma interactions. Observation of CP violation in B0 mesons.
Accelerator physics:
The original concept of a high-energy photon collider and its subsequent development. Scattering of electrons on thermal photons at storage rings and the effect was shown to limit the stored beam lifetime at LEP. Deflection of secondary low-energy positrons on the opposing electron beam as a dominant source of backgrounds at linear colliders. Coherent e+e− pair creation at linear colliders, the dominant source of pairs at high energies. Collision effects in gamma-gamma, gamma-electron collisions. Laser cooling of electron beams. Restriction of luminosity at circular e+e- colliders due to beamstrahlung. Method of monochromatization of e+e- colliders. A high luminosity superconducting twin linear e+e- collider with energy recovery.
Valery married to Lilia Yakolevna in December 1973. They have a son: Sasha.
