Vasiliy Timofeyevich Kotov was born on March 2, 1899 in Losevsky district, Voronezh oblast, Russian Federation.
In 1917, Kotov graduated from Veterinary and Medical Assistant School of the Voronezh Provincial Zemstvo. In 1928, he finished Novocherkassk Veterinary Institute. In 1953, he received the degree of Doctor of Veterinary Sciences and the title of Professor.
Vasiliy Timofeyevich worked as a veterinary medical assistant of veterinary clinics in the city of Boguchar and later in the village of Kantemirovka, at the Voronezh Provincial Experimental Agricultural Station. In 1918-1922, he was a senior veterinary medical assistant at the Voronezh Provincial Military Commissariat, as well as in the executive institutes of Pavlovsk Uyezd in 1922-1924. In 1928-1930, Vasiliy Timofeyevich worked as a veterinarian of Muchkansky Uyezd and Tambov Governorate.
In 1930-1932, he was a researcher of the Voronezh Veterinary and Bacteriological Research Institute. In 1932-1937, Vasiliy Timofeyevich held the position of the Head of the Epizootology Department, Voronezh Veterinary Institute. In the same years he was Deputy Director of Voronezh Zoo Veterinary and Bacteriological Institute. In 1941-1943, he was in the position of the Head of the 2nd department of the frontline military-veterinary hospital. In 1943-1947, Kotov was a professor at the Epizootology Department of Moscow Military and Veterinary Academy. He wrote more than 200 scientific works and the book "Bolezni svinej" ("Diseases of pigs", Voronezh, 1938).
