Vasily Ivanovich graduated from the Yaroslavl Teacher's Institute in 1913, then in 1917 - Moscow Archaeological Institute. Few years later, in 1923 he graduated from historical sub-faculty of social sciences of the Yaroslavl State University.
Vasily Ivanovich Koshelev was a teacher of the Highest National School in the settlement Bolshie Soli of the Kostroma province (1913-1916). He was an associate professor of the Russian history of pedagogical faculty of Voronezh State University (1929-1931), associate professor of the Voronezh state teacher training college (1931-1932). At the same time taught the history of the USSR at the Institute national accounting, on the High cooperative courses. The associate professor (since 1937), head of a department (1940-1951) of history of the USSR, the dean of department of history (1941-1947) of the Voronezh State teachers’ college, the associate professor of history of the USSR of Voronezh State University (1955-1956).
The author of books "From the History of the settlement of Bolshie Soli of the Kostroma Province" (Yaroslavl, 1916), the chapter "The Voronezh region in the 17th century" in the collective monograph "Sketches of History of the Voronezh Region" (Voronezh, 1961; together with V.P. Zagorovsky).
