1987 – graduated with honours from the faculty of the Krasnoznamennaya Air Force Academy named after Y.A. Gagarin with a specialization in «Command and staff, operational and tactical aviation»;
1997 — graduated from Moscow State University of Geodesy and Cartography.
Since December 1, 1975 – pilot of the 296 fighter-bomber aviation regiment (FBAR) of the 626 fighter aviation division (FAD), 61 guards Fighter Aviation corps (FAC). 16 air army in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany;
Since November 29, 1976 – pilot, and since August 30, 1979 - flight commander of the 85 guards Fighter Aviation Regiment (FAR). 16 air army in the Group of Soviet Forces in Germany;

1st flight – July 1, 1993 – January 14, 1994 - as the commander of the spacecraft «Soyuz TM-17» and of the OC «Mir» under the program EO-14 along with A. Serebrov, as well as with J.-P. Haigneré, G. Manakov and A. Poleshchuk (EO-13), V. Afanasyev, Y. Usachev and V. Polyakov (EO-15). The flight was extended for two months. During the flight he made 5 spacewalks with a total duration of 14 hours 15 minutes. Flight duration: 196 days 17 hours 45 minutes 22 seconds. Callsign: «Sirius-1»;
2nd flight – February 10 – August 14, 1997 - as the commander of the spacecraft «Soyuz TM-25 and» and of the OC «Mir» under the program EO-23 along with A. Lazutkin, J. Linenger (USA), M. Foale (USA) and R.Ewald (Germany, at the 1st stage), with the crew of the EO-22 V. Korzun and A. Kalery, as well as with the crew of the reusable transportation spacecraft «Atlantis» STS-84 - C. Prekurt, A. Collins, J.-F. Clervoy, C. Noriega, E. Lou, E. Kondakova. During the expedition on February 23, 1997 at the station there was a fire because of a defective oxygen checker. On June 25, 1997 during redocking the transport cargo spacecraft «Progress M-34» his spacecraft hit the complex and this led to the depressurization of the «Spectr» module. Made a spacewalk lasting 4 hours 59 minutes. Flight Duration: 184 days 22 hours 7 minutes 41 seconds. Callsign: «Sirius-1».
