In 1986 he graduated from the postgraduate course of MEPhI, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
Since June 14, 1979 he worked in the «Energy» research and production association.
He was engaged in debugging and installing the equipment of the gamma-ray telescope «Gamma-1» on the satelite.
According to the decision of the State Interdepartmental Commission of March 26, 1987 was selected as a candidate for the cosmonaut corps of the «Energy» research and production association. On July 3, 1987 by the order of МОМ №261 was appointed to the post of a cosmonaut-tester candidate of the 291st department of the «Energy» research and production association.
From December, 1987 to July, 1989 received general space training in the Cosmonaut Training Center named after Y.A. Gagarin. On July 21, 1989 according to the decision of the Interdepartmental Qualification Commitee he was qualified as cosmonaut-tester. On November 21, 1989 he was appointed to the post of a cosmonaut-tester of the 291st department (of the cosmonaut corps) of the «Energy» research and production association. Since August, 1989 he was preparing for a space flight to the orbital complex «Mir» as the flight engineer of one of the backup crews, along with Anatoly Artsebarsky.
From December 5, 1990 to May, 1991 he was trained as the flight engineer of the third (backup) crew of the spacecraft «Soyuz TM-12» under the EO-9 program at the orbital complex «Mir» along with Alexander Viktorenko.
In June-July, 1991 he was trained as the flight engineer of the backup crew of the spacecraft «Soyuz TM-13» under the program of the main expedition EO-10 and the Soviet-Austrian program «Austromir» on the orbital complex «Mir» with Alexander Viktorenko and Clemens Lothaller (Austria). From April 6 to July 7, 1992 he was trained as the flight engineer of the main crew of the spacecraft «Soyuz TM-15» under the program of the12th main expedition (EO-12) on the orbital complex «Mir» with Anatoly Solovyov and the Russian-French program «Antares» with Michel Tonini (France).
On February 14, 2003 by the order of the General Manager of Rosaviakosmos he was dismissed from the post of the instructor-cosmonaut-tester Rocket and Space Corporation «Energy» due to the retirement on superannuation.

2nd flight - September 3, 1995 - February 29, 1996 - as the flight engineer of the SC «Soyuz TM-22» and the OC «Mir» under the program EO-20 (the 20th main expedition) and the program «Euromir-95» with Yuri Gidzenko and Thomas Reiter. During the flight he performed 2 spacewalks with a total duration of 5 hours and 45 minutes. Callsign: «Uran-2».
3rd flight - 3 August 13, 1998 - August 28, 1999 - as the flight engineer of the SC «Soyuz TM-28», «Soyuz TM-29» and the OC «Mir» on the basis of the EO-26 and EO-27 programs (the 26th and 27th main expeditions). Took off with Gennady Padalka and Yuri Baturin on the SC «Soyuz TM-28». Landed together Victor Afanasyev and Jean-Pierre Haigneré. During the flight performed 4 spacewalks with a total duration of 17 hours 53 minutes. Callsign: «Altair-2»/«Derbent-2».
