Had different jobs: was a dogsbody in a grog-shop, office clerk, librarian in student library in St. Petersburg. Since 1909 workes as a secretary at "Nasha Niva" editorial office. In 1916-1917 was an editor of newspaper "Homan". In 1918 issued newspaper "Kryvichanin". In the end of the same year headed an office of Belarusian People's Republic government. Was Belarusian attaché in Lithuanian ambassy in Berlin. From December of 1919 to April of 1923 was a head of council of ministers (was a premier). Took part in organization of anti-polish partisan movement in West Belarus. In 1923 left council and till 1927 was issuing literary-scientific magazine "Kryvich" in Kaunas. Then worked as a director of Belarusian State Museum. Since 1928 was an academician and secretary in Institute of Belarusian Culture and Academy of Sciences of BSSR.
In 1922-1925 he was the prime-minister of the BPR and initiator of a dissolution of its exiled government which, in turn, did not mean a dissolution of the Council of the BPR its parliament in exile. Lastovsky was also a member of the Academy of Sciences of Belarus. In 1938 he was arrested by the NKVD within the Case of the Union of Liberation of Belarus. He was sentenced to dispatch, but was seized and shot by the Soviets.

He was married to writer Maria Ivanovskaya.
