Studied in Voronezh Realschule till 1917 (finished 6 forms).
Together with master Klyukhin he had reconstructed and improved folk musical instrument kantele. Gudkov is also known for writing works for kantele orchestra (runes, songs and other).
Together with Natalya Levi he created the collection named "Songs of people across Karelo-Finnish SSR" (Petrozavodsk, 1941). Apart from that, Gudkov wrote poetry collection named "From the North" (Murmansk, 1922).
A number of his literary works were based on Karelian epic songs. Namely in rhymed play “Sampo” from 1940 and in "Three brothers" libretto opera in 1941 parts of "Kalevala" folk-tale were used.
He had died during the evacuation of Frunze city (now Bishkek) in 1942.
