Amadi was born on November 29, 1943 in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria; the daughter of Amadi Joseph Ihenacho and Adanze Margaret (Nze) Amadi.
Amadi received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education from Colorado Women's College in 1972. A year later she earned her Master of Arts degree in Special Education and a Doctor of Education degree in Psychology, Guidance and Counseling in 1976 from the University of Northern Colorado.
Amadi began her career as an elementary school teacher RCM School in 1961 and held it for three years. In 1968, she took a position of a teaching/welfare assistant at Albert Schwitzer's Hospital, where she worked until 1970. Then in 1976, Virginia was appointed a lecturer of special education at the University of Ibadan and held it for four years.
Also she served as a lecturer and consultant of counsellor at Rivers State College of Health Science and Technology from 1981 to 1983. Since 1983 Amadi held the same position at the University of Port Harcourt.
Amadi is a member of the National Council for Exceptional Children, Counseling Association of Nigeria, Educational Studies Association of Nigeria and Catholic Women's Organization.
