Vivian Varney received a Bachelor of Arts from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine (1957), and a Master of Arts from New York University Institute of Fine Arts, New York City (1965). She also studied photography, painting, and drawing at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, New York (1963-1965), and earned her Doctor of Philosophy at Ohio State University, Columbus, in 1980.
In 1980 - chairman of the Education Department of Dayton Art Institute in Ohio, Vivian Varney previously served as an assistant professor of fine arts and director of the Sordom Art Gallery at Wilkes College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania (1973-1976). From 1965 to 1973 she was a university professor of fine arts at Tyler School of Art, Temple University, Philadelphia, and at the University of Rochester, New York, and Illinois State University, Normal.
