Graduate Konstantin Military Academy in Saint St. Petersburg.
1884-1896 served in army. Then art historian and expert on engraving and drawing at museums and galleries. 1909-1918 at the Hermitage.
1918-1920 at the Russian Museum. 1920-1924 at the Rumyantsev Museum. 1924-1932 at the Museum of Fine Arts (from 1925 head, Department of Russian Engraving).
1903 first work published. From 1920 chairman, Russian Social of Bibliophiles. Author of works on history of books, theater, engraving and lithography.
