1867-1880 acted at provincial theaters and with P. Medvedev’s company. 1880-1886 and 1888-1924 at Saint St. Petersburg Alcksandrinskiy Theater. 1886-1888 at Moscow Korsh Theater.
From 1924 at Moscow Maly Theater. From 1883 teacher, Saint St. Petersburg Theater College. Among his students were the following prominent actors: V. Komissarzhevskaya, A. Viv’yen, V. Yurencva and K. Zubov.
Noted for his subtle psychological interpretation of a role and fine tech presentation. Roles: Rasplyuyev in Svad'ba Krechinskogo (Krechinskiy’s Marriage) (1875). Famusov in Griboyedov’s Gore ot uma (Woe from Wit) (1879).
