1903 graduate Medical Faculty, Khar’kov University.
From 1903 assistant professor, Chair of Anatomy, Khar’kov University. Then studied anatomy under Professor Stied in Königsberg. 1908 defended doctor’s thesis.
From 1910 associate professor and head, Chair of Anatomy, Khar’kov Women's Medical Institute. 1913 elected professor, Yur’yev Medical Institute, but Minister of Education Kasso refused to confirm his appointment. The same occurcd when he was elected professor of Warsaw University.
1917-1937 professor, Khar’kov Medical Institute. Pioneer of functional anatomy. Considered every anatomical object an integral part of a single entity — the living human body — formed as a result of ontophylogenesis and modified under environmental conditions.
Devised macro-microscopic method of studying human tissues. Studied his specimens stereometrically, in three dimensions. Using his method, organs and tissues could be studied in relation to the body as a whole.
In effect, discovered a new field of morphology which he called the “border area of macro-microscopic vision”. Studied vegetative nervous ganglia and plexi of internal organs. Drew up an exhaustive picture of the distribution of nerve ganglia and plexi of the heart, larynx, lungs, esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver, pancreas, kidneys, bladder, womb and spleen.
Devised original method of preparing anatomical museum specimens. Also developed a method of sutured electrodes and effective methods for prolonged preservation of dead tissue and the restoration of their in vitam coloring. Founded in Khar’kov unique Museum of Manitoba’s Development.
Compiled original Atlas anatomii cheloveka (An Atlas of Human Anatomy) (5 volume, 1938-1942). Together with B.I. Zbarskiy, devised a new method of preserving corpses. Helped embalm Lenin’s body.
