In 1966 Vladimir Kolesnikov graduated from the Rostov State University where he studied radiophysics. He acquired his master of Business Administration degree from the Academy of National Economy under the Government of the Russian Federation in 1992. In 1975 he received his Candidate of Technical Sciences degree and in 1987 Doktor nauk in Technical Sciences degree from the Rostov State University.
Until 1969, Kolesnikov worked as an engineer at the Research Institute of Automation of Industrial Enterprises, then - at the Rostov Institute of Railway Transport Engineers (since 1993 Rostov State University of Railroads) as an engineer, assistant, teacher, head of the department (since 1988), since 1996 rector. Main works on the reliability of track, construction, lifting and transport machines; theory and technology of production of metal-polymer tribocouplings, methods of controlling their frictional properties. Kolesnikov is a member of the Expert Council under the Government of the Russian Federation, a member of the Presidium of the Scientific and Technical Council of JSC "Russian Railways".
Married Alevtina Alexandrovna Zdrok. Children: Igor, Maxim.
