IONOV, Vsevolod was born in 1851.
1873-1874 studied at Saint St. Petersburg Technol Institute.
1876 arrested for involvement in Populist movement and sentenced to five years at hard labor, after which he was exiled to Yakutsk Oblast. During exile collected valuable material on the life, folklore, language and pre-Christian religions of the Yakuts. Member, Sibiryakov and Nel’kan-Ayanka expeditions to Yakutia.
Devised Yakut alphabet. Engaged in teaching and journalism. Helped to compile East.K. Pakarskiy’s Slovar’ yakutskogo yazyka (Yakutian Dictionary).
1910 returned to Saint St. Petersburg, where he continued evaluation of his ethnographic material, which is now kept at the Leningrad Institute of Oriental Studies, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
