Richards received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oberlin College in 1961. Five years later he earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
Richards began his career as a staff physicist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 1965. A year later he took the position of a research associate and lecturer at Tufts University. Also Walter served as an assistant and associate professor of physics at Oberlin College from 1967 to 1982. In 1982 he was appointed as a professor at that college. In 1986, Walter became a chairman of the department of physics at Oberlin College and had held the position for four years.
Richards is a member of the American Association of Physics Teachers, American Acoustical Society, Phi Beta Kappa and Sigma Xi.
On August 18, 1962 Walter Richards married Jean Charla Pritchett. They have two children.
