Walter Ernst Lauer, American army officer. Decorated Distinguished Service Medal, Silver Star with oak leaf cluster, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star with 2 oak leaf clusters, Purple Heart; commander Royal Crown, Croix de Guerre with Palm, (Belgium); Legion de Honneur, Croix de Guerre with Palm (French); Order of Red Banner (Russian); War Cross (Order of White Lion), 1939 (Czechoslovakia); Army Commendation and many service ribbons.


Lauer, Walter Ernst was born on June 29, 1893 in Brooklyn. Son of Albert and Anna (Rehlmeyer) Lauer.


Student Cornell Univercity, 1915-1917, School Small Arms, 1917-1918. Graduate Infantry School, 1927, Command and General staff schedul, 1938.


Commissioned Second lieutenant (Reserve) United States Army, August 15, 1917, regular army, October 26, 1917, advanced through the grades to major general, (temporary), 1944. Served in French and American Army of Occupation in Germany, 1918-1923. African Theater of Operations, c/s 3d Infantry Division, 1942-1943.

Appointed assistant div. commander 93d Infantry Division, 1943. Commanding general 99th Infantry Division (Battle Babies), 1943-1945, 66th Infantry Division, 1945, 80th Infantry Division, 1945, all European Theatre of Operations. Retired as major general, 1946.
