Began editorial work in 1836 in Dedham, Massachusetts, and continued until 1895. Allowing for intermissions, 56 years of actual editorial work. Over 30 years chief editor of The Mining and Scientific Press, San Francisco, in which he had one-third interest.
Retired from editorial chair, 1895.
