Bill had a lifelong passion for learning. His informal interests ranged widely, encompassing the Great Books program, labrador retrievers, Victorian blue and white, sailing, American revolutionary battlefields, literature, theater, and old jazz. He was a gourmet. He turned away from academe and toward public service from a desire to help better the world. He championed the Palestinian cause and helped arrange the meeting between Anwar Sadat and Menachem Begin. Tuscany, where he spent the final years of his life, was his idea of paradise.
Married 1st Margaret Bramwell Howser in 1947 (deceased, June 1960), one daughter. Married 2nd Lois Sidenberg in December 1960, two daughters, one son.
