He was educated at the City College of New York, and completed an architectural training in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
Following a brief period of practice in New York City, Mr. Knowles moved to Flushing, and except for service in France during World War I, was continuously active in architectural work until the time of his death. Among the buildings he designed independently, or in association with others, was Queens County General Hospital, the Terminal Building and U. S. Post Office in Flushing. He was also architect of the Childrens Shelter at Jamaica, N. Y. and many private homes.
