In 1963 Larson studied art and history at the University of Siena in Siena, Toscana, Italy. In a year he received a Bachelor of Science degree in the area of art from the State University of New York in Buffalo, New York, United States. In 1968 he earned a Master of Science in photography from the Institute of Design in Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, Illinois, the United States.
Since 1973 Larson taught in numerous workshops. He was a professor and chairman of the Department of Photography at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the United States. He edits Quiver, the bi-annual photographic publication of the Tyler School of Art.
Larson produces sequential and narrative work in both black-and-white and color. Having a special interest in technological image-processing systems, he makes electro-carbon prints that are transmitted by telephone, and he has also worked with holographs, since 1977.
