The Machinery Hall at Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago, USA was designed by C. V. Kerr of Patten & Fisher and built-in 1901. The building was gifted by Malvina Armour and dedicated to the memory of her son, Philip D. Armour, Jr. The Armour Institute initially used the building for classrooms and laboratories for teaching mechanical arts classes. Currently, it houses the Illinois Institute of Technology Facilities offices and storage. In 2004 the building was recognized as a Chicago Landmark.

William Murchison received a Master of Science in Photography from Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, in 1972.
In 1980s William Murchison was director of the photography program at Odessa College, Odessa, Texas. He began developing the professional photography curriculum there in 1974. William Murchison also taught at the Winona School of Photography, Winona Lake, Indiana, in the summers of 1978 and 1977. He was a photography teacher at Houston Technical Institute, Texas (1973-1974), and at Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas (1971-1973). William Murchison edited Texas Professional Photographer for the organization of the same name in 1975-1976. One of his projects was a study of graffiti in Chicago.
