In 1972 William Rainbolt graduated from University of Maryland at College Park, obtaining his Bachelor of Arts degree. In 1975 he finished his studies at University of North Texas with Master of Arts. In 1993 he started doctoral study at State University of New York at Albany.
He served at U.S. Navy from 1969 till 1973.
Mr. Rainbolt worked as a reporter, feature writer, sports writer, and copy editor for newspapers, including Record-Chronicle, Denton, TX, Avalanche Journal, Lubbock, TX, and Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Fort Worth, TX, during 1964-1969 and 1974-1975.
In 1975-1979 he was appointed instructor in journalism at University of Missouri. From 1979 to 1984 Mr. Rainbolt served assistant professor at Rowan College, NJ. In 1984 he was appointed lecturer in English at State University of New York at Albany.
William Rainbolt married Glynda Kay on April 28, 1968, but the couple divorced in 1977. On August 1, 1981 he married for the second time Susan Warshany. Mr. Rainbolt has one daughter from his second marriage, Angela.
