Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XXXI. "THE DUTCH HAVE TAKEN HOLLAND." Affairs in Nederland went on from bad to worse, and a flood more destructive than that of the stormy ocean engulfed the country. The French Revolution broke out in 1792, and the passion for conquest seizing the citizen Frenchmen, they overran Belgium. The ice being frozen on the Scheldt, Nederland offered tempting prey. The French armies, urged on by Dutch refugees in France, and invited by revolutionary or antistadtholder committees at the Hague and Amsterdam, moved into Nederland, and the Dutch lost Holland. The French protectorate was called the Batavian Republic. Under Napoleon, Louis Bonaparte, his brother, was made king of Holland. In 1810, Nederland was incorporated with the French empire. The old landmarks of social order were swept away. New systems of laws, courts, and taxes, utterly distasteful to the people were introduced. Orators in French and Dutch raved over the rights of man, and French art, pictures, statuary, and emblems decorated the cities. The young men, as conscripts for Napoleon, perished by the tens of thousands on distant battle-fields, the victims of French ambition. Ground down by taxes and odious laws, the Nederlanders, humiliated and captive, eagerly waited for an opportunity to regain their country. French officers in Nederland were not without tokens of the popular temper. Sometimes they woke up in the morning to find their eagles, cockades, and monuments painted orange color. The expected deliverance soon came. At the battle of Waterloo, a body of Dutch troops led by the Prince of Orange fought on the side of the allies, with valor like that of the old times. Napoleon was defeated. At once the Prince of Orange, William II., backed by Russian and Prussian troops, rode into the Hague. T...

HOW A DAM BECAME A CITY. In this water-logged country a dam is the foundation and beginning of a city. We note that the names of all the ships of the N. A. S. M. Company end in dam. The suggestion of profanity is only in English and when mispronounced, with a short a. The word does not sound at all improper uttered in Dutch, with a as o in Tom. Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Spaarndam, Edam, Schiedam, etc., were originally the dams on the Amstel, Rotte, Spaarn, E, and Schie rivers. We are in a country built like a ship, in water-tight compartments, and the dykes and dams are the partitions. To study the evolution of a Dutch town, let us pass by " the new city " on the south side of the Maas where we land, the foundries and docks on the Noorder-eiland in mid river, and even the gay parks, elegant avenues, and smart shops of modern Rotterdam. We move at once to Hoog Straat, or High Street, in the old town. Near the great cathedral, with the open market-place close at hand, we shall find the place of beginnings. If we are to climb up to the High Street we must ascend the steiger, stages or steps. At the base of the raised ground we shall also find a dale or valley. Let us read the street-signs. Yes, there they are, — Steiger, and Boeren-steiger, or Farmer's steps. Long since, however, the stairs have become an incline. Sloping to the canal is Groenen-daal or Green-valley. From the top of High Street we look down on Kip Straat, another old and quaint street. To the north the land is flat, with scarcely one canal until we reach the Singel, or outer moat; while to the right, towards the Maas, is low land with many water-ways named canals, gats, vests, havens, grachts, and sloots. These are the Dutch words for ditches, drains, locks, trenches, etc. Occasionally we read on ...

(Japan sre-birth, in this our day, challenges the attentio...)
Japan sre-birth, in this our day, challenges the attention of the historian and philosopher. In the story as told from the outside by foreigners, there is a great blank between Commodore Perry and Lord Elgin. Especially in the works of English writers are there profound ignorance and misapprehension of what Mr. Townsend Harris did. This volume aims to fill a gap in history. The opening of the long-sealed Empire of Japan to foreign trade and commerce was a decisive event in the history of Eastern Asia and of the world. For such a work, the American envoy was prepared as few men could have been. After fourteen years in a village in the Empire State, thirty-two in the metropolis of the continent, six on the Pacific Ocean and in far-O riental lands, Townsend Harris, when fifty-two years of age, became, like the great Yoritomo, a lonely dweller in rocky I dzu. There both were exiles, and thence both emerged victorious to re-make Japan. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(American Commonwealth, as laid by Divine Providence, are ...)
American Commonwealth, as laid by Divine Providence, are broader and deeper than the average writer of our national history seems to have perceived. Our country is not a new England. It is a new and better Europe, dominated by that kind of Christianity which is all the purer because of freedom from political control. To the making of the nation many peoples contributed by sending their sons and daughters with varied gifts of race and temperament, as well as with faith, moral fibre, ideas, and experience. In The Romance of American Colonization, omitting military matters, the story from Sir Walter Raleigh to July 4, 1776, is briefly told. Less stress has been laid upon mere political enactments and the doings of kings and princes, and more upon the work of the people themselves. The purpose has rather been to show what the real builders of the nation have done. It is not forgotten that Swiss, German, Dutch, French, Walloon, Scandinavian, Welsh, I rish, and Scottish, as well as English, helped to make our country. (Preface At the direct and urgent request of the friends o...)
Preface At the direct and urgent request of the friends of the late Dr. Guido Fridolin Verbeck, Verbeck of Japan, the greatest, under God, of the makers of the new Christian nation that is coming and even now is, I have written the story of his life, in my own way. I had no desire, nor was any desire expressed by others that I should paint in words the picture of an immaculate saint, or set forth a being of supernal powers. Neither have I the taste or the ability to enter into the minutiae of ecclesiastical politics. Let others write of these, or do justice to his work as a churchman. I have told in outline the story of one of the nursing fathers of a nation, even of Christian Japan. I have striven to portray a faithful brother-man and a child of God, one whose tender love to his Father was shown in a life hid with Christ and a constant ministry of service to his fellow-men. I have wrought not for those who knew Verbeck, but for those who knew him not. I knew Verbeck of Japan during four years of intimacy in the Mikado sempire. Thrice visiting his birthplace, Zeist in Holland, I learned many facts about his early life and his unconscious preparation for wonderful work in the Far East. (Excerpt from A Maker of the New Orient: Samuel Robbins Br...)
Excerpt from A Maker of the New Orient: Samuel Robbins Brown, Pioneer Educator in China, America, and Japan, the Story of His Life and Work There is a new Orient, and the chief instruments in its making have been the English-speaking peoples. A century ago that part of the world ruled by Chinese ideas cared nothing for human beings, even for its own people, beyond the border. Now the once hermit nations have entered humanity's brotherhood. China has all the living nations of Europe for her neighbors. Korea has been reborn. Japan is a world-power. The changes within, wrought by the leaven from Christendom, are even more wonderful than those phenomenal and external. In this twentieth century we can see in dear perspective how the transformation has been wrought. There were many agencies and influences stimulating evolution, but none were more potent than the personality and work of the American missionaries in China, Japan, and Korea. (If I were to say that in looking over my life as a pastor...)
If I were to say that in looking over my life as a pastor, it seemed to me that I had but one charge, and that was in Schenectady, I might be doing injustice to my fellow-Christians in Boston and Ithaca, who were co-workers with me; and yet I should not be far from the truth in uttering my feelings thus; for, apart from the freshness of first love, there was, between the edifice itself and my boyhood dreams, a providential link of endearment of which I shall tell. -from "In the Home Land Again-Schenectady" Cosy and intimate, these recollections of a life in the service of God make up a warm and heartfelt professional autobiography of a man who dedicated his life to faith and education. William Elliot Griffis served as a pastor and teacher in Schenectady (from 1877-1886), Boston (1886-1893), and Ithaca (1893-1903), where he drew around him a wide circle of dedicated students and devoted friends, and his cheerful stories of them and his work are a joy to read. First published in 1903, this lovely book also includes an inspiring collection of Griffis's sermons and essays on such topics as camaraderie, community, and Christ. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Griffis's The Religions of Japan. American author, educator, and theologian WILLIAM ELLIOT GRIFFIS (1843-1912) was born in Philadelphia. He is also the author of Welsh Fairy Tales, The Firefly's Lovers, The Unmannerly Tiger, Brave Little Holland, and Bonnie Scotland.

(William Elliot Griffis's "story" is worth telling, and he...)
William Elliot Griffis's "story" is worth telling, and he tells it very well. Especially interesting are the chapters which deal with the condition that followed the transfer of government from Dutch to English, and in which the difficulties of the situation varied inversely as the tact of the Governor. British colonial governors have not a particularly good name for tactfulness the world over, but taking the whole list through, from the Restoration to the American Revolution, New York fared very well at their hands. The untactful among them paid for their untactfulness. The disreputable Cornbury was, as one might expect, the greatest stickler of them all for the rights of the Crown and the Church, and in consequence spent the entire term of his governorship in hot water, while more reasonable viceroys or vice-dukes, Bellomont, Hunter, Dongan, had correspondingly easier times. Griffis's version of the Leisler "rebellion," so-called, will be new to many readers, especially to those who have derived their notions from John Fiske. But, it is a well-stated and well-supported version. The Stadtholder of Holland, become King of England, could by no means have approved of the persecution of a colonial official at the hands of- a Jacobite junta for being the first to apply in America the principles of the "Glorious Revolution" in England. The reversal of Leisler's attainder, acquiesced in as it was by those very New Yorkers who had been most active in procuring the attainder, was a vindication and an apology.
