Yakov Isaakovich studied at the Voronezh Musical School (class of Y. Ilyulovich), graduated from the Moscow Conservatory (1932).
Yakov Isaakovich Milstein was an editor of many works for piano by Russian and Western European composers. Author of works on the history and theory of performance, including books: "The Well-Tempered Clavier of J.S. Bach and peculiarities of its execution" (Moscow, 1967), "Franz Liszt: 1811-1886" (Moscow, 1956, 1971 parts 1-2), "Konstantin Nikolaevich Igumnov" (Moscow, 1975). In March 1980, a master-class of Milstein and a concert of his students took place in Voronezh.
