1904 graduate Chemical Department, Berlin Higher Technical School. 1905-1907 specialized training under Hofmeistcr in Strasburg and Willstetter in Zurich.
From 1913 associate professor Chair of Physiological Chemistry, Strasburg University. From 1916 head, Chair of Physiological Chemistry, Warsaw University.
1920-1942 professor and director, Institute of Medical Chemistry, L’vov University. 1943-1948 director, Institute of Biochemistry, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences. 1943-1949 also head, Laboratory of Physiochemistry, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Academy of Sciences.
Studied carbohydrate metabolism of tissues and enzyme processes underlying muscular action. 1935, together with T. Baranovskiy, discovered what he called phosphorolysis, id est (that is), breakdown of glycogen by phosphoric acid. Discovered major reactions connected with intermolecular transfer of phosphate residue involving adenyl nucleotides.
Theoretically analysed mechanism of glucoside and alcohol fermentation and the links between glycolytic reactions and other changes in the muscles. Pioneered use of isotopes in Soviet biochemical studies.
Religious faith contradicts people’s efforts to obtain the truth about nature and a human being.
Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
