Yasuo Egi was born in Fukuyama, Hiroshima Prefecture as the fifth son of Gakusui Egi.
He was appointed an official translator of the Justice Ministry (1875). Soon retiring from the Government service, he started his business career. Went abroad 16 times acquiring the nickname of Yoko Hcikase, Dr. of Foreign Travel, since 1877. In 1888, he started the Omnibus Company in Tokyo and then became an importer, with his headquarters in Kan da, Tokyo. Meantime, he engaged in rubber stamp manufacturing and phototype printing. He set up a photo studio at Kyobashi, Tokyo, where new photographic technique was used.
