Fought in World War 1. From August 1918 in Red Army. 1919-1921 chief of staff and 24 April—7 May 1921 commander, 16th Army on Western Front.
October 1928— February 1931 chief of staff, Moscow Military district. Then research and teaching work at Frunze Military Academy, General Staff Academy and with General Staff. Studied and summarized experience of Civil War and World War 2.
Wrote a number or works on operations, tactics, strategy, military history and training methods.
