Yoshiaki Nitta accompanied Emperor Godaigo in his flight to Mount Hiei. When his father, together with Crown Prince Tsunenaga, proceeded (1336) to Hokuriku, Yoshiaki was ordered to raise an army in Echigo Province (Nigata Prefecture). While in Echizen he was besieged (1337) by Ashikaga forces at Kanagasaki Castle. The castle fell due to lack of food before Yoshisada could send a reinforcement. Yoshiaki and Prince Takanaga killed themstlves in the castle, after having enabled the Crown Prince to escape.
