He became head of the Nitta family after his elder brother, Yoshiaki, was kiiled in the Battle of Kanagasaki (1337).
When the Ashikagas fraudulently surrendered to Emperor Godaigo's temporary Court on Mount Yoshino (1352), Yoshimune led his forces from Kozuke Province (Gumma Prefecture) to Musashi Province (around Edo) and defeated Takauji's forces, although he failed to capture Takauji. He was killed in a battle with Norimasa Uesugi (1368).
